Federal cabinet postpones local government elections in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD Jan 2: The federal cabinet has approved another postponement of the scheduled local government elections in Islamabad and has also given approval for new legislation to hold the elections under a Punjab-style local government system.

A brief meeting of the federal cabinet was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during which the decisions taken by the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases in its meetings on December 3 and December 30 were ratified.

According to sources, the cabinet discussed new legislation related to local government elections in the federal capital. The Chief Commissioner Islamabad briefed the cabinet on matters concerning the conduct of the local body elections.

Following the briefing, the federal cabinet approved the postponement of the Islamabad local government elections once again. Sources further stated that the cabinet also approved legislation to introduce a Punjab-style local government system in Islamabad.

It is worth noting that the Election Commission of Pakistan had earlier scheduled the local government elections in Islamabad for February 15, with the compilation of results planned from February 16 to February 19.
