Election Commission Sends Important Letter to Prime Minister Regarding Cantonment Board Elections

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has sent an important letter to the Prime Minister regarding the conduct of local government elections in cantonment boards across the country.

Chief Election Commissioner stated that holding local government elections is a constitutional and legal responsibility of the Election Commission under the Constitution of Pakistan and the Election Act.

The last local government elections in cantonment boards were held on September 12, 2021. However, the term of the cantonment boards expired on April 11, 2026.

According to the Election Commission, conducting elections within 120 days after the completion of the term is a legal requirement.

The ECP said that the delimitation process for all 42 cantonment boards was completed on April 20, 2026, and all necessary prepa

rations for holding the elections have been finalized.

The Election Commission further stated that under the law, the election schedule can only be issued after receiving a written request from the federal government.

Chief Election Commissioner has urged the Prime Minister to take immediate action and provide the required written request so that the election process for cantonment boards can proceed.

The Election Commission emphasized that timely local government elections are essential for strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring public representation at the grassroots level.
