Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has taken responsibility for the team’s Australia T20 World Cup exit, placing the blame squarely on player performances rather than preparation issues.
Australia crashed out in the group stage after defeats to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, sparking criticism back home. Pundits questioned the team’s build-up, especially after several players arrived late to a warm-up series in Pakistan following commitments in the Big Bash League. Australia were swept 3-0 in that series before failing to reach the Super Eight stage.
However, McDonald rejected claims that Australia did not take the tournament seriously. He dismissed what he called a “false narrative” suggesting the T20 format was not a priority.
“We were fully locked into it,” McDonald said, adding that expectations for Australian cricket remain high after their 2021 title win.
Despite missing key bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood due to injury, McDonald insisted the available squad was strong enough.
“It shouldn’t be about the players we’re missing,” he said. “We need to own the performances.”
The Australia T20 World Cup exit marks the first time since 2009 that the team has failed to progress beyond the group stage.
