WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said he has once again helped halt fighting between Thailand and Cambodia after speaking with the leaders of both countries.
In a statement, Trump said the two sides agreed to stop all clashes starting Friday following his discussions with their leadership. He added that both countries were willing to pursue peace and continue trade relations with the United States.
After speaking with Trump, Thailand’s prime minister said the US president had expressed concern over recent border tensions and urged a return to a ceasefire. However, the Thai leader clarified that no formal ceasefire has yet been finalized with Cambodia and stressed Thailand’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty.
Last month, Thailand suspended the implementation of a US-mediated peace agreement with Cambodia after two Thai soldiers were injured in a landmine blast near the border.
The agreement was intended to restore stability after July border clashes that killed more than 40 people and displaced over 300,000 civilians.
