Islamabad: Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Myanmar’s Foreign Minister Than Swe held “very productive and comprehensive” discussions in Islamabad on Monday, as both countries aim to revitalize and strengthen bilateral ties.
FM Than Swe arrived in Islamabad on January 24 for a four-day official visit, with the Foreign Office noting that the visit “aims to enhance bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Myanmar.”
During a joint press conference, FM Dar said the discussions, which lasted over an hour, covered the full spectrum of bilateral relations, including political, commercial, trade, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation. Both sides emphasized dialogue and diplomacy as the means to address regional security and peace issues.
Dar highlighted the historic bonds between the two nations and stated that both countries agreed to expand collaboration in areas such as capacity-building, development, religious tourism, youth engagement, academic linkages, and people-to-people exchanges. He also pointed out the untapped potential for cooperation and the importance of structured and results-oriented initiatives.
The visit also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political consultations between the foreign offices of Pakistan and Myanmar, which will institutionalize regular engagement on bilateral, regional, and international issues.
FM Dar expressed Pakistan’s support for a peaceful and prosperous Myanmar, noting that the upcoming general elections could contribute to stability and inclusive governance. Than Swe, expressing appreciation for Pakistan’s hospitality, reiterated Myanmar’s desire to enhance bilateral and multilateral cooperation, citing the countries’ shared history under British rule and longstanding friendly relations.
The two foreign ministers also discussed strengthening consular support, trade ties, cultural connectivity, and humanitarian assistance, signaling a renewed commitment to advancing Pakistan-Myanmar relations in the coming years.
