Islamabad Feb 20: The recent medical examination of former Prime Minister Imran Khan has sparked political debate, despite reported expressions of satisfaction from doctors involved in his care.
According to sources, two physicians from Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), along with PTI-nominated Dr. Nadeem Qureshi, conducted a detailed medical check-up of the incarcerated PTI chairman at Adiala Jail. Following the examination, senior opposition leaders, including Raja Nasir Abbas and Gohar Ali Khan, were briefed at PIMS.
A 45-minute speakerphone consultation was subsequently held between the examining team and two doctors from Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre — Dr. Khurram Mirza and Dr. Asim Yousaf — who are regarded as trusted by Imran Khan and his family. Multiple participants reportedly heard the full discussion, and minutes were formally recorded.
Sources claim that during the consultation, the Shaukat Khanum doctors described the examination and treatment as “encouraging and satisfactory,” calling it a “textbook” case management. They reportedly congratulated the medical team and raised several clinical questions, after which they were granted access — with the patient’s consent — to medical summaries, test reports, and treatment records. A slight increase in cholesterol levels was also discussed, but no immediate intervention was deemed necessary, with doctors recommending reassessment at the next review.
Dr. Asim Yousaf reportedly thanked the medical team “on behalf of Imran Khan’s family” and assured that future medical arrangements would not be criticized.
However, the situation took a different turn the following morning when Dr. Yousaf released a video statement saying he could neither confirm nor deny certain details, as he had not personally examined Imran Khan. The statement introduced uncertainty into the public narrative surrounding the medical review.
Sources also indicate that Aleema Khan was dissatisfied with how the situation unfolded and favored maintaining a firm public stance. Meanwhile, reports suggest that protest planning continued despite the private consultations reflecting satisfaction.
Although internal discussions reportedly indicated medical reassurance, conflicting public statements by some party members and family representatives have contributed to ongoing doubt and political tension.
