Dhaka: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) achieved a sweeping victory in the country’s parliamentary elections, according to local television reports on Friday. The party and its allies captured 209 seats, gaining a decisive two-thirds majority in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad (House of the Nation).
The election, held on Thursday, marks Bangladesh’s first national vote since the 2024 youth-led uprising that forced long-serving Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from office. The outcome is widely seen as a crucial step toward restoring political stability in the South Asian nation of 175 million people.
First Election Since 2024 Gen Z Uprising
This parliamentary vote was conducted after months of unrest triggered by a Gen Z-driven protest movement, which significantly disrupted daily life and impacted key industries — particularly the garment sector. Bangladesh is the world’s second-largest apparel exporter, making political stability vital for economic recovery.
The election also stands out as the first in the region following recent youth-led revolts. Neighboring Nepal is scheduled to hold its own national vote next month.
BNP Coalition Dominates Polls
Pre-election opinion surveys had indicated a lead for the BNP, and results confirmed those projections. Jamuna TV reported that the BNP-led alliance secured 209 out of 300 parliamentary seats, ensuring an overwhelming mandate.
Following confirmation of its majority, the party issued a statement expressing gratitude to voters and congratulating the nation. It also called for special prayers across mosques, temples, churches, and pagodas for the country’s peace and prosperity.
Despite the commanding win, the BNP instructed supporters not to organize victory rallies or celebratory processions.
Tarique Rahman Emerges as Key Prime Ministerial Contender
The BNP is headed by Tarique Rahman, 60, who is widely regarded as the leading candidate for prime minister. He is the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and former President Ziaur Rahman.
