Punjab Passes Historic Bill to End Child Marriage with Tough Punishments

Mazaj News (Web Desk): The Punjab Assembly has approved the Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Bill 2026 through a majority vote, officially declaring marriage under the age of 18 a cognisable offence under the law.

According to the legislation, any adult above 18 years of age who enters into a marriage with a child will face strict punishment, including rigorous imprisonment of up to three years and a fine that can reach Rs500,000. The minimum jail term set under the law is two years.

The bill clearly states that:
“Whoever, being an adult above eighteen years of age, contracts a marriage with a child, shall be punished with rigorous imprisonment which may extend to three years but shall not be less than two years and shall be liable to a fine which may extend to five hundred thousand rupees.”

The law further introduces tough consequences for parents, guardians, or any other individuals who facilitate or allow underage marriages. Those found guilty of promoting, permitting, or failing to prevent such marriages may also face imprisonment ranging from two to three years, along with fines up to Rs500,000.

Another clause adds that any person who enables child marriage—whether directly or indirectly—will be held accountable under the same penalties if negligence or intent is proven.

Punjab Child Protection Bureau Chairperson Sara Ahmed, speaking to Geo News, praised the move and said it aligns with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. She described the legislation as a “landmark step” toward safeguarding children, particularly girls, and expressed optimism that it would lead to meaningful social reform.

The government has also announced that awareness campaigns and strict enforcement mechanisms will be introduced to ensure proper implementation of the new law.
