Mazaj News : Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported further details on remarks by Iran’s judiciary chief, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, which were aired on state television.
During a visit to a prison housing people detained in connection with the protests, Mohseni-Ejei said that authorities must act swiftly in cases where individuals have committed serious acts such as burning or beheading others. “If someone burned a person, beheaded them and set them alight, then we must carry out our duties quickly,” he said.
Iranian media also cited him as saying that the trials should be conducted publicly, adding that he spent around five hours at a Tehran prison reviewing detainees’ cases.
Human rights organisations say that thousands of people have been arrested and warn that the judicial system may increasingly resort to the death penalty.
