Former DG ISI Faiz Hameed files appeal against military court sentence

Islamabad Dec 30: Former Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Lieutenant General (Retd) Faiz Hameed, has filed an appeal against the sentence awarded to him by a military court.

His counsel, Mian Ali Ashfaq, confirmed that an appeal against the verdict of the military court was filed on December 27, though he declined to share further details of the appeal.

It may be recalled that a Federal Court Martial had sentenced Faiz Hameed to 14 years’ imprisonment for violating the Official Secrets Act, misuse of authority, and breaches of the Pakistan Army Act.

Earlier, Director General ISPR Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry had disclosed during a press conference on December 11 that investigations against Faiz Hameed were initiated under the Army Act on August 12, 2024. Following a 15-month inquiry, the military court handed down the sentence.

Under Section 133-B of the Pakistan Army Act, the convicted officer was entitled to file an appeal against the Field General Court Martial’s verdict within 40 days of the announcement of the sentence.

According to the law, the appeal will be reviewed by a Court of Appeals constituted by the Army Chief. After review, the Army Chief has the authority to accept, reject, suspend, or modify the sentence.

Sources said the appeal argues that the sentence was illegal and based on flawed grounds, claiming that the prosecution failed to prove its case and that the right to a fair and transparent trial was not upheld.
