A head-on train collision near the Danish capital, Copenhagen, on Thursday left multiple people injured, according to police and media sources.
Reports indicate that 17 individuals were injured in accident, with 4 in critical condition. The crash occurred in the Gribskov area, roughly 40 kilometres north of Copenhagen.
Authorities described the incident as “serious,” though a police spokesperson confirmed to AFP that all passengers had been safely evacuated from both trains.
“Two trains have collided, and police along with emergency responders are present in large numbers,” the official statement said.
Police spokesman Tim Simonsen stated that emergency services were alerted at 6:30am local time (9:30am PKT). He confirmed it was a head-on collision and noted that passengers sustained injuries, but did not provide further specifics.
Gribskov’s mayor, Trine Egetved, shared on Facebook that some घायल passengers were airlifted to hospitals by helicopter.
The crash site was quickly cordoned off by authorities. Images from the scene showed severe damage to the front sections of both trains, which collided between the towns of Hillerod and Kagerup.
Egetved expressed shock and sadness over the incident, noting that the train route is widely used by local residents, including workers and students.
“Emergency teams are working relentlessly, and at the municipal level we are focused on understanding what happened and ensuring that all affected individuals receive proper assistance,” she said.
Denmark is known for its strong rail safety standards. However, past accidents include a 2019 crash that resulted in eight fatalities and 16 injuries. In another incident last August, an express train struck a farm vehicle at a crossing, killing one person and injuring 27 others.
