Pakistan Calls for Restraint and Diplomacy as UN Warns of Rising Middle East Tensions

Mazaj News (Web Desk) Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations on Tuesday urged global actors to exercise restraint and prioritize diplomacy as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East, warning that the region is facing multiple overlapping crises.

Speaking during a debate at the United Nations Security Council, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad emphasized that the current situation remains highly unstable and interconnected, requiring immediate efforts to prevent further escalation. He stressed that compliance with international law, the UN Charter, and relevant Security Council resolutions is essential, along with responsible conduct and dialogue among all parties.

He highlighted that the Palestinian issue remains central to regional peace and stability, noting the importance of sustained international attention and engagement on the matter.

Referring to the situation in Gaza, the envoy said that although a ceasefire had brought temporary relief, it continues to be fragile and is reportedly being violated. He noted that since the ceasefire announcement, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed in ongoing strikes, underscoring the continued humanitarian crisis.

He added that while humanitarian aid has resumed, it is still far below what is required to meet urgent needs on the ground. He called for full respect of the ceasefire and for significantly expanded, uninterrupted humanitarian assistance to affected civilians.

The ambassador also raised alarm over worsening conditions in the occupied West Bank, pointing to increased violence by settlers, expansion of settlements deemed illegal under international law, and other measures contributing to instability.

Beyond the immediate conflict zones, he warned that rising regional tensions are also affecting global economic stability, including disruptions in strategic maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, with ripple effects felt in countries including Pakistan.

Reiterating Pakistan’s position, he said diplomacy and dialogue remain the only viable path forward at this critical stage, and confirmed that Pakistan continues to support diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions.

He concluded by reaffirming that a lasting resolution to the Middle East crisis depends on addressing the core issue of Palestine, stating that the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state is essential for achieving a just and enduring peace in the region.
