Mazaj News (Web Desk ) An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale shook Islamabad, Peshawar, and several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday, according to the Seismic Monitoring Centre.
Initial reports confirmed that tremors were felt in both the federal capital and the KP provincial capital, while strong shaking was also experienced in Swat, Nowshera, Shangla, and Buner.
The Seismic Monitoring Centre stated that the epicentre of the quake was located in the Afghanistan–Tajikistan border region. It further added that the earthquake originated at a depth of around 170 kilometres.
So far, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.
Pakistan lies on the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it highly vulnerable to seismic activity. The country has witnessed several destructive earthquakes in recent decades.
Earlier tremors were also felt in Karachi and, before that, in Islamabad and parts of KP earlier this month.
In February this year, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake affected Islamabad, Swat, and Hunza, while the devastating 2005 earthquake in Azad Kashmir claimed more than 73,000 lives and left millions homeless. In 2021, Balochistan’s Harnai region was also hit by a quake that killed at least 20 people and disrupted rescue operations due to landslides.
Experts continue to warn that Pakistan’s mountainous and seismic zones make disaster response difficult, highlighting the need for stronger preparedness measures.
