New Wave of Terror Threat Emerging from Afghanistan, global community must pressure Taliban: PM Shehbaz

ASHGABAT, Dec 12: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has warned that a new wave of terrorism is emerging from Afghanistan, urging the international community to pressure the Afghan authorities to fulfil their responsibilities.

Addressing the International Peace Forum in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, the prime minister welcomed the declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Peace, calling it a significant step toward global harmony.

He said Pakistan continues to play an active role in promoting international peace, noting that the peaceful resolution of conflicts remains a core pillar of Pakistan’s foreign policy.

The prime minister highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in support of peace in Gaza, saying an important peace proposal was adopted with Pakistan’s backing. He thanked Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Türkiye, the UAE, Jordan, and Iran for their cooperation in pushing for a ceasefire.

He emphasized that the UN Security Council Resolution 2788 reflects Pakistan’s vision, adding that a lasting ceasefire and uninterrupted humanitarian aid to Gaza are essential.

PM Shehbaz stressed that sustainable peace and sustainable development go hand in hand. Fair access to advanced technologies, financial inclusion, and integrating women into the economic mainstream are key priorities for the government, he added.

Calling Pakistan’s clean and green development model a global example, he said climate change and inequality pose major challenges for developing nations.

The prime minister reiterated that Afghanistan has become a source of a renewed terrorism threat, urging concerted global action to ensure the Afghan authorities meet their obligations.

He said the world must abandon a zero-sum mindset and embrace cooperation, adding that building bridges between people, ideas, and markets is essential for global stability.

“The forum must translate its discussions into practical actions,” he stressed, calling for collective efforts to address climate threats, promote peace, and enhance regional connectivity.
