PM Okays Key Power Projects for Gwadar, Gilgit-Baltistan

ISLAMABAD, Dec 8 : Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Monday approved major power projects for Gwadar and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), including a 100-megawatt solar project in GB aimed at ensuring uninterrupted and affordable electricity.

Chairing a high-level meeting on power sector initiatives, the prime minister approved a comprehensive plan for the immediate resolution of electricity issues in Gwadar Port City. He directed all relevant institutions to work in full coordination to guarantee reliable and cost-effective power supply.

He also instructed authorities to fast-track the 100 MW solar project in GB, stressing the need for clean, sustainable, and uninterrupted electricity. Shehbaz Sharif reiterated that the welfare and economic development of the people of GB remained a top priority for the federal government, adding that steps were being taken to promote industrial activity and investment in the region.

The prime minister appreciated the recommendations submitted by the committee headed by Ahsan Iqbal and the Ministry of Energy. He directed the ministry to ensure timely implementation of immediate, short-term, and long-term measures outlined in the strategy.

“Uninterrupted electricity in Gwadar will boost national economic activity and investment,” he said, noting that the power supply for industries must meet international standards. He added that stable electricity and improved facilities would help transform Gwadar Port into a leading global port and a major economic hub.

Briefing the meeting, Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari said power disruptions in Gwadar had already been reduced by 42% due to prompt steps taken by the ministry. He added that a plan had been finalized to stabilize voltage levels in the next six months and improve power supply for both domestic and commercial users.

Under the short-term plan, 9.7 megawatts of solar capacity will be installed in major government institutions over the next 8 to 12 months. For long-term needs, a 40 MW solar project will be established to support sustainable power supply in Gwadar.

Officials informed the meeting that electricity demand in Gwadar is expected to rise by 30% in the coming years due to industrial expansion, ongoing port development, and urban growth.

The 100 MW solar project in GB comprises an 18 MW rooftop program and an 82 MW utility-scale solar plant, both scheduled for completion by 2027. Joint initiatives between the GB government and the Ministry of Energy are expected to save the government Rs 1 billion annually. The GB government will ensure timely provision of land, infrastructure, and related facilities.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Minister for Energy Awais Leghari, Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervez Malik, and senior officials.
