Pakistan Pushes Diplomatic Efforts as US–Iran Talks Face Uncertainty in Islamabad

Mazaj News (Web Desk) Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi held a meeting in Islamabad with US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker, during which both sides discussed diplomatic efforts related to a potential second round of US-Iran talks, according to the Interior Ministry.

The ministry said the “important meeting” included a detailed exchange on the evolving regional situation, with particular focus on arrangements for renewed negotiations between the United States and Iran that may take place in Islamabad.

Naqvi appreciated US President Donald Trump for extending the ceasefire, describing it as a positive step that helped ease tensions and advance peace efforts in the region. He also expressed hope for constructive movement from Iran’s side.

The interior minister stressed the importance of maintaining diplomatic engagement, saying that lasting peace can only be achieved through continuous dialogue. He added that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Asim Munir were actively working at all levels to support a peaceful resolution.

Naqvi further noted that both parties should be given an opportunity to pursue a diplomatic settlement to the ongoing tensions.

Meanwhile, uncertainty continues over the next round of talks, as the US delegation’s visit to Islamabad has been delayed and Iran has not yet confirmed its participation.

The postponement comes amid ongoing tensions, including disputes over Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz and reported US restrictions on Iranian ports.

Despite delays, Trump has suggested that talks could still take place within days, although trust between the two sides remains fragile.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, however, has avoided confirming any schedule, saying diplomatic engagement will only proceed when conditions are suitable for protecting national interests.

Earlier, Naqvi also met Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam and US representatives to discuss logistical and security arrangements for the proposed Islamabad talks. He assured that comprehensive security measures have been put in place for visiting delegations.

The initial round of direct US-Iran discussions was held in Islamabad on April 11–12 following a Pakistan-facilitated ceasefire, and while it ended without agreement, it also did not collapse completely.
