Toshakhana-II case: court says Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi given reduced sentences due to age and gender

ISLAMABAD Dec 20: The written verdict in the Toshakhana-II case against former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi has been released, stating that the court awarded reduced sentences considering Imran Khan’s advanced age and Bushra Bibi’s status as a woman.

Special Judge Central Arjumand Shah sentenced both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to 17 years’ imprisonment each, along with a fine of Rs164.25 million per person. In case of non-payment of the fine, each will have to undergo an additional six months’ imprisonment, the court ruled.

Court Findings

According to the written judgment, the prosecution successfully proved its case, and both accused were found guilty of criminal breach of trust. The court held that the evidence on record established the charges beyond reasonable doubt.

Breakdown of Sentences

The court stated that:

  • Imran Khan was awarded

    • 10 years’ imprisonment under Section 409 of the Pakistan Penal Code, and

    • Seven years’ imprisonment under the Anti-Corruption Act.

  • Bushra Bibi was also sentenced to a total of 17 years’ imprisonment under the same legal provisions.

The court further directed that the period already spent in custody by both convicts would be adjusted against their sentences.

Observation on Sentencing

In its observations, the court noted that minimum punishment was imposed due to Imran Khan’s age and Bushra Bibi being a woman, despite the seriousness of the offence.

The verdict marks a significant development in the high-profile Toshakhana-II case involving allegations of misuse and undervaluation of state gifts.
